I’ve just finished this painting, which was taken from my recent coastal expedition up to Southwold. This is a stunning stretch of the British coast, and for those of you who are not familiar with Suffolk…there is a lot of sky! (which is one of my current project subjects.)
In this painting I was endeavoring to make steps toward a more abstractive approach of capturing the feel and magic of the place rather than a literal mapping of the area. This particular painting was done from a spot in the sand dunes, which i especially love – being such a liminal place. Sand dunes are neither land nor sea no beach, but somewhere ‘betwixt’ that is constantly shifting and changing.
I am currently working on more outer landscapes in this way, moving on to some works focused on the skyscapes of Suffolk’s coast where the sea meets the sky.
